What is legal custody?

There are a number of different forms of child custody, one of the most elemental of which is legal custody. Legal custody confers on a parent the right to make important decisions related to the upbringing of their child. This includes making decisions relating to healthcare, religious training, and education, among other things. Unless specifically stated, a parent with custody over a child has this right.
